Hat Care Guide
Hat Care Guide
Proper care will keep your HatFlow Company hats looking great for years to come. Follow these guidelines to maintain the quality, shape, and appearance of your headwear.
General Hat Care Tips
Storage
Keep Shape: Store hats on a hat rack, shelf, or in a hat box to maintain their shape. Avoid stacking hats on top of each other.
Avoid Crushing: Never fold or crush structured hats, especially fitted caps and snapbacks.
Cool & Dry: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and material degradation.
Dust Protection: For long-term storage, use a breathable hat box or cover to protect from dust.
Daily Maintenance
Brush Regularly: Use a soft-bristled brush to remove dust and lint from fabric hats.
Air Out: After wearing, allow your hat to air out before storing to prevent moisture buildup and odors.
Handle with Clean Hands: Oils from your hands can stain and damage hat materials over time.
Cleaning Different Hat Types
Baseball Caps, Snapbacks & Trucker Hats
Spot Cleaning (Recommended):
- Use a damp cloth with mild soap or gentle detergent
- Gently blot stains—don't rub aggressively
- Rinse with a clean, damp cloth
- Air dry completely away from direct heat or sunlight
Hand Washing:
- Fill a basin with cool water and mild detergent
- Gently agitate the hat in the water
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water
- Pat dry with a towel and air dry on a form or towel to maintain shape
- Never machine wash or put in the dryer
Beanies & Knit Hats
Hand Wash: Use cool water and gentle detergent. Gently squeeze—don't wring or twist.
Dry Flat: Lay flat on a clean towel to air dry. This prevents stretching.
Avoid Heat: Never use a dryer, as heat can shrink knit materials.
Wool & Felt Hats
Brush Only: Use a soft hat brush to remove dust and dirt.
Steam for Reshaping: Hold over steam (not directly in water) to remove wrinkles and reshape.
Professional Cleaning: For deep cleaning, take to a professional hat cleaner.
Never Submerge: Water can damage and shrink wool and felt materials.
Premium Leather Patch Hat Care
IMPORTANT: Special Care Required for Leather Patches
Cleaning Leather Patch Hats
DO NOT wash or submerge hats with premium leather patches in water. The leather dye can bleed and stain both the patch and the hat fabric, causing permanent damage.
Proper Cleaning Method:
- Hat Fabric: Spot clean the fabric portions only using a damp cloth with mild soap, carefully avoiding the leather patch
- Leather Patch: Wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth (not wet) to remove surface dirt
- Use a dry cloth to immediately pat the leather dry
- Allow to air dry completely away from direct heat or sunlight
Protecting Your Leather Patch
Leather Protector is Highly Recommended:
- Apply a quality leather protector spray before first wear
- This creates a protective barrier against moisture, stains, and UV damage
- Reapply every 3-6 months or as needed
- Follow the leather protector product instructions carefully
- Test on a small, inconspicuous area first
Leather Patch Maintenance
Conditioning: Apply a small amount of leather conditioner every few months to keep the leather supple and prevent cracking. Use sparingly and buff with a soft cloth.
Avoid Water: Keep leather patches away from rain and moisture. If they get wet, pat dry immediately and air dry naturally.
Prevent Fading: Store away from direct sunlight to prevent the leather from fading or drying out.
Handle Gently: Avoid bending or creasing the leather patch area.
Dealing with Common Issues
Sweat Stains
Mix equal parts water and white vinegar, apply to the stained area with a cloth, then rinse with a damp cloth and air dry. For stubborn stains, repeat or use a specialized hat cleaner.
Odors
Sprinkle baking soda inside the hat, let sit overnight, then shake or vacuum out. For persistent odors, use a fabric refresher spray designed for hats.
Loss of Shape
Use steam to gently reshape the hat, then place on a hat form or stuff with tissue paper while drying to maintain the desired shape.
Fading
Prevention is key—store hats away from direct sunlight. Once faded, color cannot be restored, but you can minimize further fading with proper storage.
What NOT to Do
- Never machine wash structured hats (especially those with cardboard brims)
- Never put hats in the dryer—heat can shrink, warp, and damage materials
- Never submerge leather patch hats in water—the dye will bleed
- Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or strong detergents
- Don't iron hats—use steam instead if reshaping is needed
- Don't store in plastic bags—they trap moisture and can cause mildew
